As parents, we all want to give our children the tools to grow into confident, resilient, and respectful young people. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is more than just a martial art—it’s a powerful way to help kids thrive both on and off the mats.
In a safe and structured environment, children learn practical self-defense while developing discipline, focus, and perseverance. BJJ builds physical fitness, balance, and coordination, but its real strength lies in the values it instills: respect, teamwork, and the confidence to handle challenges.
At Upper Hutt BJJ, your child will be coached by Vaughan Antonio, a highly experienced teacher and athlete. Vaughan has coached youth rugby, basketball, track and field, and high-performance high school sports, as well as working as a teacher and lecturer in exercise and sport science. These roles have given him unique skills in connecting with young people, developing their potential, and creating a positive learning environment.
On top of his teaching and coaching background, Vaughan has a wealth of experience in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu itself. With over 16 years on the mats, he is a 2nd-degree black belt, has represented New Zealand internationally, and is a multiple-time national champion. His competitive success includes winning gold at the prestigious IBJJF World Masters in the USA, showing the level of dedication and skill he brings to his students.
Unlike many sports, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu allows every child to progress at their own pace. Success is not about being the biggest or fastest—it’s about problem-solving, patience, and effort. For shy kids, BJJ helps them come out of their shell. For energetic ones, it provides a positive outlet. And for all kids, it offers friendships and a sense of belonging.
If you’re looking for an activity that empowers your child’s body, mind, and character—under the guidance of a coach with world-class experience and a passion for youth development—Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is the perfect choice.
